Brushing and flossing should be taught with the same vigour that a child is taught to walk. It should be as habitual as putting one foot in front of the other. Every child should know to brush their teeth every morning and every night. Read on to learn how to teach your child to brush properly.
When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?
As soon as the first tooth appears you will need to start brushing your child’s tooth/teeth.
What is the best way to do it?
- You will need a soft child’s size tooth brush and a fluoride-free toothpaste for those under the age of 24 months, and one with fluoride for those 2 years plus.
- For those under the age of three limit the amount of toothpaste to that of a size of a grain of rice, for those three plus a decent pea size will suffice.
- Kids thrive on routine so try and ensure your child brushes their teeth the same time each day, after their breakfast and before bed.
- Brush your child’s teeth for two minutes, paying particular attention to the back teeth, molars that are particularly vulnerable to cavities. Some people like to do a countdown so the child knows how long they have to go.
- Teaching your child to floss from an early age is important and will ensure the best oral hygiene.
- Children under the age of 8 require supervision when brushing their own teeth.
- Don’t forget to replace any toothbrush after 2 – 3 months, after any illness or when the bristles are frayed.
Lead by example
Be a good example. If your children see you brushing and flossing twice a day, they are more likely to see it as a regular routine.
After you’ve brushed their teeth, let them have a go themselves just to get used to the action.
